[Teaching Approach & Method]
1. Two periods will be needed for this part. One is used for the reading and
explanation of the passage of Unit 2, one for the presentation of the students
to report what they have learned after they have read the following units of 3,
4, 5 and 6. The presentation will be made by each group in class.
2. PPT will be used to present a specimen cheque and require the student to
read and identify the parts of a cheque and pay attention to the following
points:
1) the sorting code number;
2) the place of the paying bank;
3) the signature of the drawer or writer;
4) the amount in words and in figures;
5) the characters in magnetic ink at the bottom of a cheque;
The students will be required to read the whole passage after the brief
explanation of the characters of a cheque and then discuss the following question
or topics:
What is a cheque?
A cheque is a specialized form of a bill of exchange which is drawn on a banker
and is payable on demand. From the practical viewpoint, it is a payment instruction
addressed by a customer to his bank, telling the bank to pay a specified sum of money
to the named payee “or order”.
The difference of a open cheque and a crossed cheque:
The payee of an open cheque may obtain cash if he presents the cheque
personally to the bank on which it is drawn.
A crossed cheque can be paid by the bank on which it is drawn only for the
credit of an account either at the same branch or at another branch of a bank.
A cheque card and the function of a cheques card:
A cheque card is a document issued by a bank which enables the holder to
cash cheques up to a stated maximum amount at any branch of the issuing
bank or of certain other banks with whom reciprocal arrangements have been
made.
The card is useful when making payments to third parties, because it contains
an undertaking to the payee of a cheque that the bank will pay any cheque
not exceeding the stated maximum sum, provided that it is drawn by the
person named on the card and provided that cheque is drawn before a
specified date.
The undertaking of the issuing bank on the cheque card:
The cheque must be signed in the presence of the payee.
The signature on the cheque must correspond with the specimen signature on
the card.
The cheque must be drawn on a bank cheque form bearing the code number
shown on the card.
The cheque must be drawn before the expiry date of the card.
The card number must be written on the reverse of the cheque.
