RAN also comprises interfaces towards different management systems. RAN consists of the following parts: o RNC The RNC interacts with the CN as well as the RBSs and manages radio links. ETM1—E1 ETM4—STM-1 SCB The SCB contains an ATM switch and is, via the backplane, connected to the ATM switch ports located on other boards. Page 5 of 140

BBIFB The Baseband Interface Board (BBIFB) connects the BB subrack to the RF subrack. This interface carries traffic-related signalling, and includes both the Radio Access Network Application Part (RANAP) control signalling and user data transfer using Frame Protocols towards the PS CN, GTP-U protocols. The Iu also transfers connection setup messages towards the CS and the PS CN. Iu_cs: this interface uses RANAP for control signaling and traffic towards MSC. Iu_ps: this interface is used for data transfer using Frame and GPRS Tunneling Protocols User Plane (GTP-U). Page 16 of 140

This includes both Node B Application Protocol (NBAP) control signaling and user data signaling using Frame Protocols. Iur The lur is an interface between two RNCs. This interface carries physical ATM, ATM Adaptation, and RN handling. This includes both Radio Network Subsystem Application Protocol (RNSAP) control signaling and user data signaling using Frame Protocols. Mur Is the management interface provided by the RNC, it is used by the Element Management (EM) and RANOS which is responsible for the UTRAN network management.. Mub Is the management interface provided by the RBS, it is used by the Element Management (EM) and RANOS which is responsible for the UTRAN network management. Uu Also called “Air Interface” is the interface between the RNC and the User equipment (Ue). The Layer 1 part of Uu is terminated in the RBS and the Layer 2 part is terminated in the RNC. The Layer 3 part of the protocol is terminated in the RNC and the Core Network (CN). Page 17 of 140
UTRAN training materialDEC/NJ/R HongBo Protocol architecture The protocols over the Uu and Iu interfaces are divided into two structures: o User Plane protocols These protocols implement the RAB service. o Control Plane protocols These are the protocols for controlling the RABs and the connection between the UE and the WCDMA RAN (including requesting the service, controlling different transmission resources, handover, streamlining and so on). Figure 16 UTRAN Protocol Reference Model The interfaces are set up using a protocol reference model which is similar for all interfaces. The figure illustrates this model, specifying the architectural principles used in specifying the Transport Network protocols. UTRAN training materialDEC/NJ/R HongBo ATM introduction Overview Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is a cell-oriented switching and multiplexing technology that utilizes fixed-length packets to carry different types of traffic. These sources of traffic are identified by a combination of VPI and VCI. The role of the VPI/VCI fields is to indicate ATM virtual channel identification numbers, so that the cells belonging to the same ATM virtual channel can be distinguished. All VCI and VPI have only local significance across a particular link. The ATM layer presents two different levels of multiplexed connections (VP and VC levels) and therefore two different possibilities of switching. Figure 23 Virtual channel and virtual path switching Connection traffic description ATM source traffic descriptors defined for signaling are: • Peak Cell Rate (PCR): The PCR traffic parameter specifies an upper bound for the rate at which traffic can be submitted on an ATM connection. It allows the network to allocate sufficient resources to ensure that the network performance objectives (., for cell loss ratio) can be achieved. • Minimum Cell Rate (MCR): MCR specifies the minimum bandwidth required by the source. UTRAN training materialDEC/NJ/R HongBo Service categories CBR, UBR+ and UBR are the ATM service categories used in WCDMA. • Constant Bit Rate (CBR): CBR is mainly used by real time applications and connections that request a static amount of bandwidth that is continuously available during the connection lifetime. The PCR descriptor characterizes the cell flow. • Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR): The UBR service category is intended for non-real-time applications, ., those not requiring tightly constrained delay and delay variation. Examples of such applications are traditional computer communications applications, such as file transfer and email. UBR service does not specify traffic related service guarantees. • UBR+: The UBR+ denomination does not appear in the ATM forum, but it refers to UBR with a minimum desired cell rate indication. This service category does not provide any specific guaranteed cell delay variation but only a certain cell loss ratio. It is characterized by PCR and MCR. ATM quality of service classes The ATM Layer system function in Cello provides four QoS classes (numbered 1-4) where class one gives the best QoS in terms of Cell Loss Ratio (CLR) and Cell Delay Variation (CDV) and class 4 gives no QoS guarantees. QoS class 1 and 2 are the only classes applicable for real time traffic. UTRAN training materialDEC/NJ/R HongBo The ATM stratum model excluding AAL2 There are two layers in the Stratum Transport Plane in the model, one VP-layer and one VC-layer. In the general case, the VP and VC layers should motivate us to define two different strata, one including VP switching and one including VC switching. However, in WCDMA system, we only use VPs that terminate in adjacent network elements and there is no VP switching used anywhere. Instead, we have made a split of the Transport Plane into a VP layer which does not use switching and the VC layer which utilizes VC switching controlled by element managers implemented in the management plane. The ATM stratum includes, following the Stratum Model, a User Plane consisting of the AAL5 adaptation service. AAL5 is supporting connectivity for the MTP3b transport in the MTP Stratum and IP transport in the IP stratum. AAL2 adaptation is not considered in the ATM stratum but in the AAL2 stratum, since AAL2 encompasses an entire switching layer in its own right. Figure 24 ATM Stratum Model Page 25 of 140

For AAL5, the network elements need AAL5 path information to be defined. An AAL5 path is defined by the PVC and includes configuration information for both endpoints only. A parameter of AAL5 path is Service Data Unit (SDU). It is different from each other for every AAL5 path. Other AAL5 parameters are set to default values for the network elements. Management traffic for RBS is carried over IP on ATM AAL5 in Mub interface. For the maximum IP packet length over Ethernet is 1500 bytes and the LLC/SNAP header Page 27 of 140
UTRAN training materialDEC/NJ/R HongBo used in the encapsulation of IP over ATM is 8 bytes, the max user SDU size is set to 1508 bytes for Mub. RANAP, RNSAP and traffic are carried on ATM using broadband SS7 . SAAL-NNI. Considering that SAAL-NNI max SDU size is 276 bytes and SAAL header is 4 bytes, the max user SDU size is set to 280 bytes for SAAL-NNI links. IuPS traffic is carried on ATM using AAL5 as adaptation layer. On top of AAL5, the PS user payload is carried by IP with GTP-U and UDP as intermediate protocol layers. For the maximum IP packet length over Ethernet is 1500 bytes, GTP header is 12 bytes, UDP header is 8 bytes, IP header is 20 bytes, and LLC/SNAP header is 8 bytes, the max user SDU size is set to 1600 bytes for IuPS. The max user SDU size of SAAL-UNI NBAP depends on the maximum message length assumed. Currently it was assumed 2008 bytes for NBAP-C and 520 bytes for NBAP-D. There is not any VP cross connection defined anywhere. All cross connections are configured on VC level. Figure 26 PVPs connection The PVP needs defining parameters in addition to physical ports, VP number and traffic descriptor. All PVPs are defined as CBR VPs with QoS class = 1 allowing for Cell delay variation CDV <= 1 ms and Cell Loss ratio of CLR=10e-8. Peak cell rate set to maximum for the PDH and SDH levels supporting each VP connection. For CBR, QoS class and Peak Cell Rate need to be defined. The values used are QoS=1. PCR= 318000 Cells/s for STM-1 and PCR= 4500 Cells/s for E1 respectively. The traffic descriptors define the same parameter values for ingress and egress traffic. Page 30 of 140

They pass the MGW and thus utilize VPs between SGSN – MGW and between MGW – RNCs. Between the SGSN and MGW there are four physical interfaces, two used for control for IuC-PS and two used for IuU-PS user payload. Both the control and the user network PVCs are duplicated from each RNC. Between SGSN and MGW each of the control and user PVCs use different physical interfaces so there is redundancy for both services. Between MGW and per RNC, there are also two physical links commonly used for different services, IuU for PS and CS. The two links MGW - RNC1 (2) support redundancy for control and user payload traffic both for PS and CS traffic. The following PVCs are configured between SGSN and RNCs: o VC-N1-S1-1, VC-N1-S1-2, VC-N2-S1-1, VC-N2-S1-2: Used for RANAP IuC- PS control traffic and originates in RNC ATM interface board and terminates in the SGSNW IuC interface board. SAAL-NNI The Signalling ATM Adaptation Layer-Network Node Interface (SAAL-NNI) offers link layer functionality ensuring that the two end points of a signalling link can exchange signalling messages reliably. It incorporates error checking, flow control, and sequence checking. SAAL-NNI is used as signalling link in both Iu and Iur interfaces. SAAL-NNI includes Service Specific Connection Oriented Protocol (SSCOP), Service Specific Coordination Function-Network Node Interface (SSCF-NNI), and AAL5 layers. SSCF-NNI provides the special requirements at layer 2 for matching to the network-network interface. SSCOP provides functions such as: transfer of user data with sequence integrity, error correction by selective retransmission, flow and connection control, error reporting to layer management, and connection maintenance in the prolonged absence of data transfer. SAAL-NNI is used to support the SS7 signalling protocol where SAAL-NNI links are used by the MTP3b network layer. SAAL-UNI Signalling ATM Adaptation Layer-User Network Interface (SAAL-UNI) is required rather than SAAL-NNI in the Iub interface because the RNC and RBS are not peer entities and because the RNC only needs NBAP connections with the RBSs that are directly under its control. The SAAL-UNI offers link layer functionality ensuring that the two end points of a signalling link can exchange signalling messages reliably. It incorporates capabilities, such as error checking, flow control, and sequence checking. The use of SAAL-UNI allows an efficient transport of the NBAP in the Iub interface as well as to support Q.-2630 transport in Iub. SAAL-UNI comprises Service-Specific Connection-Oriented Protocol (SSCOP), Service-Specific Coordination Function-User Network Interface (SSCF-UNI) and AAL5 layers. Page 38 of 140
UTRAN training materialDEC/NJ/R HongBo ATM AAL2 stratum AAL2 overview AAL2 background A real-time data source consistently produces packets are less than 48 octets in length, then the schemes presented are inadequate. It is possible to send partially filled cells using other AALs, but this is wasteful of bandwidth. The solution is to allow the multiplexing of several “mini-cells” into an ATM cell payload. This eventuality is catered for by AAL2. Figure 32 AAL2 Multiplexing AAL2 logical link connection Each stream of data is referred to as an AAL2 Logical Link Connection (LLC). The LLC can be thought of as a low capacity pipe that is carried with several other LLCs on an established ATM Virtual Channel Connection—referred to as the AAL2 path. An AAL2 LLC is defined as a bi-directional point-to-point connection. The same CID value is used in both directions. The AAL2 network Because AAL2 involves an additional layer of multiplexing when compared to ATM and allows switching on the AAL2 level, AAL2 can be viewed as an overlay network set up on top of the ATM network as depicted in below. This is the same as the relationship between SCCP and MTP. If there is a requirement that two AAL2 LLCs arriving at a node on the same ATM Virtual Channel Connection (VCC), diverge and leave on different VCCs, AAL2 switching functionality must be incorporated. Since AAL2 involves an additional layer of multiplexing, an AAL2 LLC needs to be established before user communication can take place. This involves negotiating a common CID value as well as specifying various traffic parameters that allow AAL2 to take advantage of the underlying ATM QoS. This negotiation is the role of . In formal terms, is a bearer independent signaling protocol used to establish, release and maintain, dynamic, on-demand AAL2 LLCs between AAL2 Service Endpoints. UTRAN training materialDEC/NJ/R HongBo Signaling MTP stratum The Message Transfer Part level 3 (MTP3b) protocol is responsible for transmission of signal units, with information provided by user parts, from one Signalling Point (SP) to another. In WCDMA RAN and SCCP protocols are identified as users of MTP3b. The MTP3b allows transportation of signalling messages through SAAL-NNI links and extends the functionality offered by the SAAL-NNI to provide network layer functionality. MTP3b functions are responsible for distribution, discrimination, and routing of messages. To provide reliable transport capability for the transfer of signalling messages between signalling points (SPs), the MTP keeps track of the events occurring in the signalling network. The MTP is able to perform the following functions: • Ensure that incoming messages are either distributed to a user part in its own node or routed and forwarded to the next signalling point or signalling transfer point. • Ensure that outgoing messages are directed to the appropriate signalling link. • Control and manage all functions that are needed on each signalling link to provide reliable transfer. The MTP stratum model The MTP stratum is divided two parts: broadband MTP and narrowband MTP. Broadband MTP is used at the connection between MSC and RNC, SGSN and RNC, RNC and RNC. The MTP Switching is implemented in three network elements, the MSC, SGSN and RNC. UTRAN training materialDEC/NJ/R HongBo SCCP stratum The Signalling Connection and Control Part (SCCP) is a protocol that provides additional functions to the Message Transfer Part level 3 (MTP3b) that provides connectionless and connection-oriented network services, as well as address translation capabilities. The SCCP protocol provides the functionality to transport signalling messages between SCCP users and also through Signalling Transfer Points (STPs). The SCCP is used to carry RANAP messages in the Iu interface and RNSAP messages in the Iur interface. The messages associated with a specific UE use SCCP connection-oriented mode; all other messages use SCCP connectionless mode. The SCCP uses for addressing, a Destination Point Code (DPC) and Subsystem Number (SSN), that allow direct routing by the SCCP and MTP3b. The SSN is used by a terminating node (for example, the RNC) to identify different applications, for example, RANAP or RNSAP. In connectionless mode, all information required to route the data to its destination is contained in each data packet and is analyzed in each node. Thus, no logical connection is established between the two end nodes. The connectionless mode is typically used to transfer small amounts of real-time-critical information between two users. The connection-oriented service is a way of exchanging signalling information between two network service users by establishing a logical connection between them. In connection-oriented mode, the data transfer messages only contain local reference numbers to identify the connection and they follow the previously established path. Connectivity support The connectivity Support for SCCP/TCAP stratum consists of the MTP-3/MTP-3b stratum signaling points and their communication function.
