*
Here’s a short video that pays tribute to our billion dollar brands.
*
AG Lafley is P&G’s Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive.
. has put P&G back on track to deliver its long term goals by focusing on top brands, countries and customers, superior consumer value, and improved cost and cash management. Further, he has set a clear vision for future growth, including the acquisition of Clairol in 2001, the acquisition of Wella in 2003, and Gillette in 2005, the company’s largest acquisition to date.
*
*
*
The Company was founded in 1837 as a small soap and candle business. Today, it is the largest consumer products companies in the world.
*
Here’s a brief look at P&G’s historical highlights:
William Procter and James Gamble were from England and Ireland, respectively. They were on separate journeys through the United States when the challenges of travel led both of them to Cincinnati for relief. William stopped to care for his ailing wife, Martha, who soon died. James Gamble also landed in Cincinnati seeking medical attention for himself.
Cincinnati was a busy center of commerce and industry in the early 19th century. William Procter quickly established himself as a candle maker. James Gamble apprenticed himself as a soap maker.
The two men’s paths may have never crossed had they not married sisters — Olivia and Elizabeth Norris. Their father convinced his two sons-in-law to become business partners. In 1837, Procter & Gamble was born.
*
Some other highlights: In 1887, P&G instituted a pioneering profit sharing program that gave employees an ownership stake in the Company. This is a photo from one of the first profit sharing celebrations P&G held in Cincinnati.
*
In 1882, P&G brand advertising began with this Ivory ad. Today, P&G is one of the world’s largest advertisers.
*
In 1890, P&G set up an analytical lab at its Ivorydale plant in Cincinnati to study and improve the soap-making process. It was one of the earliest product research labs in . History.
*
In 1919, P&G announced a plan to sell directly to retailers. This helped stabilize production and demand, got P&G closer to consumers, and changed the grocery trade.
*
P&G played a key leadership role in championing the development of the product bar code. The first products ever scanned were at a Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio in 1968.
*
Gillette, acquired by P&G in 2005, shares in P&G’s early brand innovation, having invented the first safety razor in 1895.
*
*
*
*
*
Swiffer was the first sweeper to use a disposable electrostatic cloth that attracts more dirt, dust, hair and common allergens than traditional methods
*
Actonel is the prescription medication that works fast to help reverse bone loss and protect bones
*
P&G is committed to ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. As the Company innovates and makes everyday life a little better, it recognizes it must also address responsibilities to the environment, the economy and society.
*
P&G is serious about protecting the environment. It has long-standing programs to ensure that responsibilities are met.
• Every product is evaluated to ensure it is safe for the environment as well as for people.
• P&G has had an environmental management system in place for more than 35 years.
As a result, the Company has
• Made products more concentrated, using fewer raw materials and packaging.
• Reduced waste and increased energy efficiency at P&G facilities.
