San Diego State University Lotus Executive Customer Service Training Program Brief Description of the Big-Five Personality Model 「大五因子」性格模型的简介 (Prepared by Dr. Chi-Sum Wong, Professor, Department of Management, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, ., Hong Kong, 香港中文大学管理学系黄炽森教授,Email(电邮): cswong@) (A) Definition 定义 Personality is relatively stable traits that manifest in a consistent manner of behaviors in different situations. Thus, it describes stable characteristics of a person. For examples, a relatively extravert person will take initiative to interact with other people in various type of social situations. A relatively agreeable person will tend to accommodate another person’s ideas more easily regardless of the status or closeness of that other person. Since these characteristics are stable, it is quite difficult to change an adult’s personality. (B) The Big Five Model大五因子模型 The Big-Five Personality Model describes five stable traits. These traits are relatively independent among each others (., one can be high on one trait but low on the other). These five dimensions are briefly described as follows. Conscientiousness is the degree to which one is responsible, dependable, persistent, and achievement oriented. Extraversion is the degree to which one is sociable, talkative, assertive, and willing to interact with other people. Openness to New Experiences is the degree to which one is imaginative, artistically sensitive, intellectual, and willing to gain new experiences. Agreeableness is the degree to which one is good-natured, cooperative, trusting, and willing to accommodate others’ opinions. Emotional Stability (The opposite is Neuroticism) is the degree to which one is relax, secure, not nervous facing changes, and relatively small fluctuation in emotions. Shanghai, China 1August 06, 2005
San Diego State University Lotus Executive Customer Service Training Program (C) Relationship between Personality and Job Choices As can be seen from the above description, the basic principle about personality and job choice is a matter of “match”. For example, someone high on agreeableness may be suitable for jobs that need a lot of coordination and interaction with people (., social services). Someone low on agreeableness may be suitable for jobs that require one will stick to some principles, rules or regulations (., law enforcement). An extravert may be suitable for sales type of jobs while an introvert may be suitable for jobs that require him/her to keep secrets. Even for neuroticism, relatively neurotic person may be suitable for jobs that require them to express their emotions and feelings (., some artistic jobs). The only exception appears to be conscientiousness. Research indicate that it is positively related to job outcomes regardless of the nature of job. Various measurements of the Big-Five personality have been developed. McCrae, & Costa (1987) (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 52(1): 81-90) have developed an 80-item adjective scale that is available to people who are interested in using it. We have tested the reliability and validity of this scale in Hong Kong. We have shortened the scale to a 30-item scale with acceptable reliability and validity in Hong Kong. The attached are the Chinese and English versions of this scale and the statistics for the student anchor groups in Hong Kong. Shanghai, China 2August 06, 2005
