A Winning Lesson Plan for PEP Primary English
Grade 4 Unit 6 "Shopping"
I. Introduction
Good morning, respected judges and teachers! Today, I’m honored to present my lesson plan for PEP Primary
English Grade 4, Unit 6 "Shopping". This unit centers on the theme of daily shopping, focusing on clothes vocabulary,
color descriptions, and price-talking sentences. It aims to develop students’ language competence, cultural awareness,
and learning strategies in line with the New Curriculum Standards for Primary English. Now, let’s dive into the
details.
II. Analysis of Teaching Material
Position & Role: This unit is a key part of Grade 4 English. It connects to Grade 3’s "Colors" and "Numbers"
units, laying a foundation for future complex dialogues about daily life (., restaurant ordering, travel planning). The
core content—"clothes + colors + prices"—is highly practical, bridging classroom learning and real-life
communication.
Key Content:
Vocabulary: 12 clothes words (., shirt, skirt, sweater, sunglasses, scarf).
Sentence Patterns: "How much is it? It’s... yuan."; "Can I help you?"; "I want this...".
Functional Aim: Enabling students to ask about prices and express shopping needs in simple English.
III. Analysis of Students
Prior Knowledge: Students in Grade 4 have learned basic colors (red, blue) and numbers (1-50). They can
understand simple English instructions and enjoy interactive activities (games, role-plays).
Learning Characteristics:
Strengths: They are curious, active, and good at learning through concrete situations and hands-on experiences.
Challenges: Multi-syllable words (., "sunglasses", "scarf") may cause pronunciation difficulties; some students
struggle with combining "colors + clothes + prices" in one sentence; a few shy students are reluctant to speak in
public.
IV. Teaching Aims
1. Knowledge Aims
Students can recognize, read, and use 12 clothes vocabulary words correctly.
Students can master and apply key sentences: "How much is it? It’s... yuan." and "I want this (color) + (clothes)."
2. Ability Aims
Students can complete a simple shopping dialogue in a simulated situation (., asking prices, choosing clothes).
Students can cooperate with peers to create short shopping role-plays.
3. Affective Aims
Cultivate polite communication awareness (using "Thank you." "You’re welcome." in shopping).
Stimulate interest in learning English by connecting it to daily life.
Develop teamwork spirit through group activities.
V. Key & Difficult Points
Key Points:
Correct pronunciation of clothes vocabulary (especially multi-syllable words).
Flexible use of price-talking sentences.
Difficult Points:
Combining "color + clothes + price" to make complete sentences (., "This red sweater is 35 yuan.").
Helping shy students participate actively in oral practice.
VI. Teaching Methods & Learning Strategies
1. Teaching Methods
Situational Teaching Method: Create a "Class Supermarket" to make learning vivid and real.
Game-based Teaching Method: Design "Price Guess" and "Vocab Match Race" to reduce learning stress.
Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT): Assign layered tasks to meet different students’ needs.
Multimedia Aids: Use pictures, videos, and flashcards to attract students’ attention.
2. Learning Strategies
Cooperative Learning: Students work in groups to finish role-plays, developing teamwork.
Scaffolded Learning: Provide sentence frames (., "I want this ______. How much is it?") for weak learners.
Self-assessment & Peer Assessment: Guide students to evaluate their own and classmates’ performance.
VII. Teaching Procedures
The lesson lasts 40 minutes, divided into 5 parts:
Step 1: Warm-up & Lead-in (5 mins)
Song & Review: Sing the song "Color Song" (revising red, blue, yellow) and play "Number Bingo" (reviewing
1-50) to activate prior knowledge.
Lead-in: Show a short video of a kid shopping for clothes. Ask: "What did the kid buy? How did he ask the
price?" Trigger students’ interest in the "Shopping" theme.
Design Purpose: Link old and new knowledge, create a relaxed learning atmosphere.
Step 2: Presentation (10 mins)
Vocabulary Teaching:
Use real objects (a sweater, a skirt) and flashcards to teach new words. For multi-syllable words like
"sunglasses", split into "sun + glass + es" to help pronunciation.
Do "Word Gestures": Students act out clothes (., mimicking putting on a scarf) while saying the word,
strengthening memory.
Sentence Teaching:
Create a "Teacher’s Shop" scenario: The teacher plays the shopkeeper, holding a blue shirt. Say: "Look! This is a
blue shirt. How much is it? It’s 20 yuan." Repeat and invite students to ask: "How much is it?"
Design Purpose: Use concrete aids and demonstrations to make abstract knowledge easy to understand.
Step 3: Practice (12 mins)
Layered Practice:
Basic Level: "Vocab-Color Match": Students match clothes cards (., skirt) with color cards (., pink) and say
"pink skirt".
Intermediate Level: "Price Guess Game": Show a clothes picture (., sweater) and let groups guess the price
with "Is it... yuan?" The teacher replies "Yes, it is./No, it’s cheaper/dearer."
Advanced Level: "Pair Work": Students practice dialogues with sentence frames:
A: Can I help you?
B: I want this ______. How much is it?
A: It’s ______ yuan.
B: Thank you.
A: You’re welcome.
Design Purpose: Meet different students’ needs and consolidate knowledge step by step.
Step 4: Production (10 mins)
"Class Supermarket" Activity:
Divide the class into 6 groups. Each group sets up a "shop" with clothes pictures, price tags, and name tags
("Shopkeeper" "Customer").
Task: Groups create a 1-minute shopping dialogue, including choosing clothes, asking prices, and thanking.
Performance: Invite 2-3 groups to show their dialogues. The class and teacher give feedback (., "They used
‘How much is it?’ correctly!").
Design Purpose: Let students apply knowledge in real-like situations, developing their oral communication
ability.
Step 5: Summary & Homework (3 mins)
Summary: Use a mind map on the blackboard to review key words (clothes) and sentences (price-talking). Ask
students: "What did we learn today?" to reinforce memory.
Homework:
Basic: Draw a "My Favorite Clothes" picture and label it with words (., "yellow dress").
Advanced: Record a short video with family: Practice asking the price of one piece of clothes at home (.,
"Mom, how much is this sweater?").
Design Purpose: Extend learning to daily life and meet individual differences.

IX. Teaching Reflection (Preview)
This lesson integrates "fun" and "practicality":
Strengths: Situations and games arouse interest; layered tasks ensure all students progress.
Improvements: For shy students, assign "small roles" (., handing price tags) first to build their confidence in
speaking.
By focusing on students’ core competencies, this lesson helps students learn English happily and use it freely.
Thank you!
