“Logistics” is one of those words which has recently come
into vogue although the ideas have been around ever
since man stopped being a hunter gatherer who lives
literally from hand to mouth, and began to make use of
stores of various kinds. Thus was created the original
supply chain and the original buffer stock.
The high standard of living which we in the West now
enjoy is due, largely to the ever-increasing efficiency with
which things are produced and moved down the supply
chain to the point where they are purchased and
consumed.
This increase in efficiency has been most rapid during the
past 50 years or so. During this time there have been a
number of significant changes in the way things are
produced, stored and moved, which is what logistics is all
about.
