企業,由小店發展成根基穩固的中型公司,以及全新加坡首間理工學院;

the system as simple as possible,

重”Green Logistic” ,如 GLS, Gates Rubber Company.
Caterpillar Logistics Services (Caterpillar)
Business Development Manager,
William
Lucas Lam
Caterpillar 公司的 drive-in racks , Gates 公司的 side-loading lift
Lin Ying Kwan
Yuen Cheuk Wai 03326533d

的運作及管理;見識到多間物流公司如 TNT, Translink 等的貨倉的設計及操作;

Individual Report

INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOUR TO SINGAPORE
Name: Wong Wing Yee Iris
Comparing with the PRD study tour in my year one study, I found that
the Singapore study tour is more constructive and enjoyable. As I am a
year three student now, I have learnt more through in-campus training
which enables me to better identify the reasons and problems of those
firms visited. Almost three academic years in logistics, the lecturers
have at least trained me up with some insights. With basic understanding
of the industry, the tour has given me room to explore opportunities and
very importantly as my career advisor. By exploring the real working
environment and sharing with managers in the industry, I could
comprehend the job nature and criteria.
All members of the study tour were divided into four departments,
everyone had his/her function and commitment. I felt a high team spirit
in the study tour. Before departure for Singapore, we were split among
individuals and unwilling to take responsibilities. But after arriving
Singapore, it became different as we saw each other everyday, we had
breakfast together at a round table, we lined up and listened together
to the orders through walkie-talkies, we have the same surprise with
Very Narrow Arm and the Floating Loader Facilities. During the seven-
day-tour which was the first time in the three-year course, all of us
joined together to have similar experience, learning and sharing. I use
the word “us” to mean the three advisors of the tour, the directors of
the group, the committees, and the members.
I had a very “intensive” course delivered by the three lecturers in
Singapore. Every time we were in the coach, they would talk to us and
teach us on some issues. Sometimes, it was about why they had chosen a
particular firm, highlighted the characteristics of the firm; from time
to time, they gave explanation of the activities and facilities,
elaborated with some real cases. Every day during the journey, we
evaluated our performance and discuss any questions arisen. They told
us what the standards were needed, how far we were lagging behind and
how to improve it. What I want to emphasis is that the tour and the
lecturers had taken us out of the green house to see how other people in
the real world and the firms in the field were performing and the
standards they were looking for. Only after I recognized my deficient
and the standard, I could aim to make up and push up the standard.
In addition, I liked the competition, . the Role & Function of
Advisors in the Tour. It was not because our team won the champion, but
it indeed provided a chance for us to think about how much the advisors
had done for us. How they performed like a friend, like a family member,
like a teacher, like a facilitator. Without the competition, our team
would not try to have at least 3 hours, calming down, rationalizing
their speeches and their behavior, visualizing them in our play. We
finally realised that they were really committed to teach us, encourage
us and improve us. At the end of the competition, they heard our voices,
our thanks, and some critical comments; they shared their background,
their experience, and provided a clue by telling us why they performed
like this.
We learn from what they teach in school, but in the tour, we learn from
them. Learn from people, it is lively, more efficient, and for me, it is
long lasting and invaluable experience.

Introduction
After the tour, my general impression of Singapore is neat, orderly and
harmonizing atmosphere with numerous races. The quality of the citizens
is undoubtedly higher than that in Hong Kong.
Government Support and Singapore Logistics
Like Hong Kong government, Singapore government is also playing a
crucial role in the logistics industry development. The Singapore
government pays most of the cost for logistics industry related training
or further study. The amount is around 80% to 100% of the total cost. It
is a great effort to transform laymen to logistics professionals.
The Singapore government also further differentiates herself from other
transshipment hubs. She tries to establish a chemical hub in the South
East Asia region. The government’s supports enable many small to medium
size chemical logistics companies to expand their businesses, like G&U
Logistics.
Although most SME companies would thank the Government that she has
standardized most of the process, the government controls or
interventions may not be welcome by the giant global player. TNT
Singapore Global Account Director Mr. Damien Tan likened Singapore an
orchestra, Hong Kong a Jazz band . Singapore is highly regulated but
in a harmonizing manner, whereas, according to the latest report by Wall
Street Journal, Hong Kong has the most flexible economic system and the
most free market. Commercial sectors, especially the giant players,
prefer the system in Hong Kong more.
Employee’s Quality
Mr. Lee, warehouse manager of Trans-Link Express Pte Ltd., has worked
in warehouse industry in Hong Kong for many years. He has a very rich
experience in warehouse know-how and management. He said that the land
and labor cost in Singapore were not cheap and facing the high cost
competition comparing to Singapore’s surrounding cities. The situation
is very similar to Hong Kong, but the working attitude and language
skill of the employees are much better. He said that the culture was
very different. Employees are more self-motivated to carry out the tasks.
Besides, their language skill is also one of the strengths. A relatively
moderate educated employee, such as a diploma holder, can speak fluent
English, Mandarin and other foreign languages. However, an ordinary
degree holder in Hong Kong, like me, cannot speak as fluently as they
can. This may be a critical factor that contributed to Caterpillar
Logistics’ decision when she chose Singapore as a regional hub, instead
of Hong Kong.
My Singaporean friend and other tour-mates have concluded that the night
life in Singapore is really boring, but I think they have interpreted it
from a negative side ignoring the benefit of that boredom. There is not
many pastimes that can distract people. This definitely helps students
and employees to concentrate on their study and job.
Strategic Management Philosophy
Some companies, including IMC, said that they could not get great profit
from the logistics business, unless companies could differentiate
themselves from other competitors.
IMC is previously a pure ocean bulk carrier. She also establishes a
logistics division that caters the customer’s needs, but she remains
focusing on the shipping business. TNT Singapore is an express service
provider that insists on “time sensitive delivery”. This jargon
consists of two elements: express service and logistics services.
They showed that companies should maintain their core durable and
inimitable competence, at the same time, and copy the new know-how as
fast as possible and integrated into their system. No single player can
only be a pure carrier. They have to provide more integrated services by
cooperating with other companies to form a business symbiotic and long
term relationship.
Improvement of for the Tour
It is no doubt to say that this tour is the most successful one among
the others that I had joined before. There are some minor things that
can be improved.
The reward system for asking meaningful questions should be more
formalized. As asking question is an important learning process in the
tour, the time of recording, person of recording and the reward criteria
should be clearly defined before announcing to the participants.
Otherwise, students may not do so seriously.
As I have observed, the speakers who were reluctant to use walkie talkie
in the middle of the warehouse visits complained that their fingers were
very tired after pressing the button for a long time. I suggest that
some strong rubber bends can be used to hold the button in fixed
position during the warehouse visit. It is better to consider the
speakers’ needs as they are our “internal customers”. They will be
eager to speak more if we can provide a good communication tool to them.

Study Tour Report
Seminar was the major activity in the continual firm visits throughout
the study tour. Although the style of presentation is nearly the same
for what was done in the common lecture, it clearly gave a brief
introduction about companies such as their structure and management
policy. The information is valuable to me for surviving in competitive
market as it was more updated than the concept in textbook. Also, it
gave me a real picture of how to apply management concepts into logistic
industry. Their strategic plans also reflect the recent and future trend
of logistic industry. For example, fast moving items involve a wide
range of goods that result in large demand of logistic service. Freight
links logistics Ltd. concentrates on finished goods handling. High
turnover rates of finished goods turns into high utilization of its
warehouse. However, it is always keen competition of handling finished
products in logistics sector. Some firms chose to provide specialized
logistics services. For instance, G & U logistics establishes a firm
market position in the logistic industry by providing forwarding,
transportation and warehousing service for hazardous chemicals. Also,
Gate Rubber Company specializes in handling rubber belts and assembles
of automobiles. These two companies go well ahead of their competitors
by making good use of their competitive advantage and in turn enlarge
their profit margins.
Most of the firms let us see the “heart” of their companies, which is
the whole process of goods handling in their warehouse. Commonly, they
receive goods and scan barcode sticker on the goods in order to upload
the quantity, destination etc into the computer. Then, a barcode
containing the information of the goods is then generated and being
attached onto the goods. Since all the barcodes are unique, they will
not get confused about the goods. Computers manage nearly all the
processes, which is highly efficient. After coming to a packing area,
goods are checked as to what size of customers want and are packed into
a standardize box for easy handling and delivery. Goods are checked by
IT facilities in several stages. Import and/or export documents and
records are systemically updated into office computers.
Another common strategy of logistic service provider is the automation
of warehouse especially for high-risk service, for example G & U
logistics. The company invests in AS/RS system in order to minimize
manual errors. The system also distinguishes the type of goods and
automatically locates a storage area for the goods. However, one
business concept may not be able to apply to all firms. For example,
Caterpillar logistics services does not adopt automation as to be
flexible to meet what customers need in a fluctuate market. In other
hand, the company designs its warehouse structure in the simplest way in
order to save labor effort as well as flavor labor to learn.
Most of the companies in Singapore are willing to share. They told us
what their core business is and willing to share their experience in how
they cope with difficulties. For example, Richland group Ltd. is still
facing the problem of drivers’ adaptability. TNT is also facing the
shrinking market of parcel delivery in electronic transfer environment.
To be true, their willingness to share with others may be one of the
success factors.
Internally, I also learnt the skills of how to raise questions, which
specially meet what you want to know. I was offered a chance to give a
thank you speech to the host company. With a better speech given by our
tour advisor, it sets a good sample to learn what to say in certain
circumstance or in certain identity.
Different students may have different observation during the visit,
therefore, it is suggested to have a brief sharing after the tour. A
fresh review (observation given by classmates and advisors) after each
visit can strengthen our knowledge of each visit.
Also, everyone worked hard in the study tour. However, we were involved
in different jobs in different periods throughout the study tour. For
instance, marketing department had to find airline, travel agents before
the tour while financial department had to do financial report after the
tour. Workload is concentrated in particular department in particular
time. Therefore, I suggest the workload of the PolyU Logistics Co Ltd.
should be shared among us by using cross-functional team strategy.
Relevant department is responsible for giving out main plan and final
decision making while staffs from other departments are assigned to give
a hand in completing the task. With more help, work will be much easier.
Also, everyone will be clear of what is happening in the study tour.
Then unnecessary conflicts, such as disagreement with the price of
travel agent, will then be minimized.

After visiting 11 firms and 1 collage within 8 days, I know more about
the logistics industries in reality, especially for the management
aspect.
The knowledge that we have learnt in the lectures is not exactly the
same in the real world, for example, supply chain concept, to a manager,
it can be explained as providing more services to the customers, which
is the extension of their core business. However, this concept can also
be regarded as a matter of relationship between the parties within the
whole supply chain.
Just in time can be a key factor for a company to be success, such as
Japanese automobile manufacturers However this concept is no longer
suitable to all logistics companies. Gates Rubber Company is one of the
exceptional cases. The JIT concept can only be used under customers’
requests.
Automation is a way to increase the efficiency in managing a warehouse.
However Caterpillar has no intention to change the warehouse into an
automatic one. The manager in Caterpillar emphasises the high cost of
installing the equipment. Although Caterpillar Logistics forms long-
term agreements with several firms, also it built a headquarters for
Daimler Chrysler. Cost of implementing automatic warehouse is still a
problem to such a large firm. Caterpillar is not the only firm to
reject to change to automatic warehouse. During the visit, Trans-Link
Express Pte Ltd is another firm which does not adopt the automation.
The reason behind is related to the climate in Singapore. High humidity
will affect the operation of the automatic equipments such as the
sensor between the ground and the machinery.
Besides automatic warehouse, companies may face problems when using hi-
tech equipments, such as handheld device. Richland upgrades their
equipments for the purpose of improving their services However their
staff has some difficulties in adapting the use of the device. The
company needs to put extra effort on teaching their staff to use as
well as allowing more time for them to learn. Besides, Richland also
requested the manufacturer to make the handheld device in a more user
friendly.
After the firms visit, I found out that the brand name of the company
is not important to the end customers. What the consumers concern is
the quality of the product. They will not consider the logistics
services provider It can explain why Caterpillar’s warehouse is
willing to use the name of their trade partner - Daimler Chrysler,
instead of its own name. It also explains why Richland is adopting open
policy – allow their client’s logo print on their truck and their
uniform.

In this eight days tour, I had learnt knowledge outside textbooks,
which use in reality. I can see different views, visions and values of
company. Some companies believe only in advanced, most updated
facilities which can bring success to them while some believe simple is
the best. Some companies focus much on interaction with customers, while
some say providing good logistics service can attract customer
automatically. By the detail explanation of scenario the company faced,
I understand what factor needed to consider when making decision.
Even better, the tour inspired me a lot. From scheduling new
shipping line to making new size containers, different companies tried
different methods to survive in the keen competitive market. Creativity
and long sight would be critical factors of sustainable profitability
and development of the company. Of course, this tour gave me much
technical knowledge of how different warehouses operate. Different types
of warehouse services for different customers customized and specialized
for their commodities. Visiting warehouse gave me idea of difficulties
of operation, positioning of commodities, necessary accessory facilities
etc. In that way, I can understand physical and mental factors needed to
be concern in operation of logistic company.
I would say the rundown of the tour is quite successful. I think
that the emergency plan can be further improved. When a student is sick,
advisor has responsibility to take care of student. I am sorry to say
advisors are little bit passive this time. I hope advisors can show more
passion and activeness in dealing with a sick student. I am concerned on
the issue of politeness. I would like to say after the presentation is
finished, every student seems to rush to warehouse and make a mess in
presentation room. In my experience, they might push the chair back to
original position before leaving and it can impress the host company. I
hope every person will pay attention to this point next time.
In conclusion, I treasure this invaluable tour. As not every
student could join the tour, I hope the Department of Logistics can give
such invaluable chance for each student to learn. May be the department
can give each student a set of material given by the company visited, or
an open course for case study of individual company that worths to have
deep discussion.

Individual Report of Singapore study tour 2005
This is a very successful study tour, which does not only enrich my
knowledge about shipping and logistics industry, but also about
Singapore. Moreover the relationship between the students and the
advisors has been improved much.
About Logistics:
Because of the limited area in Singapore, most of the warehouses have
six to eight stacks, and narrow pass between the “stacks”. Thus
VNA (Very Narrow Arm) machines are used for the cargo operation.
Singapore specializes in handling chemical cargo. It is because of the
encouragement of the Singapore government. The government is very strict
in regulating the chemical handling companies, which higher the entry
barrier of this industry in Singapore. With lesser competitors, the
companies can invest large sum of money in the chemical warehouse and
facilities etc. Besides regulations, the Singapore government also
subsidies the companies in monetary term, and provides many courses in
training up the experts in this industry.
Afforestation and environment protection are very popular in Singapore
Many firms have adopted the green logistics concept in operation,
recycling the pallets, packages & etc.
About Singapore:
Singapore is a well planned, clean and “fine” city; the “powerful”
government has arranged the “best” for her citizens. Everyone in
Singapore is well disciplined and follows all the rules set by the
government. As described by the TNT manager, Singapore is just like an
orchestra controlled by the government, while Hong Kong is a jazz band,
people can perform as they wish and both of them can perform good
“music”.
To my surprise, Singapore people are comprehensive in languages. They
can speak fluent English and mandarin. Some of them even speak Cantonese!
I think a weakness of Hong Kong students is English when comparing with
students in Singapore. This makes me to decide trying out a better way
in learning and practicing English.
About the tour:
This is the second study tour I joined. The pervious one I joined was
the Japan study tour held in 2002 when I was a Year 2 student. Obviously,
this Singapore study tour has improved a lot! I believe it is due to
various reasons.
My role in the pervious study tour was a student who followed the
instructions only; no need and no chance to contribute anything in the
tour. This time, we had plenty of time for preparation. All students
were required to attend all the meetings, and had chances to raise our
opinions during the meetings, which encouraged our commitments
throughout the tour.
Moreover, the grading system also motivated us to put more effort to
raise questions and performed well during the firm visits. In the past,
being a Year 2 student, I would always hesitate in raising questions as
I afraid that it was abnormal among the Year 2 students. Being a Year 3
student, I realized that it was my last chance to practice the skill in
raising questions, and thus had tried my best in attempting to do so. On
the other hand, other Year 2 students were also willing to raise
questions too! It might be due to the effect of the grading system,
which tried to “push” the students to try. I believe that it is a
first step for them to improve themselves and perform better in the next
tour!
The great difference between the Japan and Singapore study tours, should
be the relationship of the teachers and students. Because of different
points of view, there were some conflicts between the teachers and
students in the Japan tour, this situation did not happen again in the
Singapore tour, as both of us had more chances to communicate. It is
appreciated for the holding of the “Speech Competition about the three
advisors”, which gave us an opportunity to think about the roles of the
advisors and thankful to their contributions in the tour.
Although it is a pity for me having no more chance to join the LGT study
tour anymore, I am still looking for the next study tour, and wish that
will even more successful!!! Best wish~!
Report for Study Tour ~ Joan Choi
The 8 days 7 nights trip is the most memorable experience since my
studies in the Department of Logistics as it has provided a valuable
opportunity for us to explore the real life of the logistics operations.
Thanks to the cooperation and coordination of the Singapore Logistics
Association, various participant companies and most of all the efforts
of the advisors, the itinerary of this tour was well organized and the
tour was smoothly run. Although the schedule in this trip was tight, we
were able to grasp every moment to visit many of the representing
logistics firms in Singapore.
During the trip, it was our honors to receive the warm receptions by
various parties. The scene that impressed me most was that in TNT, the
general manager came to conduct a speech to us. In fact, not only in TNT,
but in most of the firms we had visited, we had been served by the
various senior managers. The respect and enthusiasm that we had received
was a big surprise to me. As in my traditional mind-set, most of the
business sector would only focus on boosting their profits. However,
after this tour it provides for me another insight. Nowadays, the firms
have taken up much social responsibilities as their business objectives.
Take Caterpillar as an example. Their enthusiasm in educating the
students or new bloods was obvious. The manager, Mr. William Teo’s
willingness to share, to disclose the business situation and his
openness in discussing every issue concerning “Logistics” were
respectful.
This trip has provided us an opportunity to access the most advanced
technology in logistics field. Take G&U Logistics as an example. They
have the most sophisticated chemical warehouse in Asia and had
demonstrated a successful AS/RS (Automated Storage & Retrieval System).
Besides, I have also gained very practical knowledge in warehouse
operation. For example in Trans-Link Express Pte Ltd., the company has
taken the client’s needs into consideration when deciding the warehouse.
Nowadays the relationship between the clients and Logistics providers
are no longer “sell and buy”, in fact they are business partner or
even alliance. The relationship between Trans-Links and KFC (his client)
is so close that they develop the business strategies together eg. when
to conduct a promotional sales.
Furthermore, the visit to NOL had informed us the importance of
innovation. The break-through that APL has taken has led the company to
a leading position and also rewritten the operation of shipping industry.
Besides the innovating mind, the willingness to take risk is also
another concern. IMG is another demonstrator which has shown us how
innovation can be operated into business and to make “Impossible to
become possible”.
In fact, I have gained a better insight and knowledge of Logistics
industry after this trip and I am really looking forward for more
opportunity to explore and experience like this kind. Finally, I would
to like express my sincere thanks to all the parties involved.
My Report of the Singapore Study Tour
Name: NG SIO KEONG
Student ID: 03346285d
It is my first time to join a study tour. The reason I joined is because
a study tour would provide me a great opportunity to learn outside the
classroom and hence new knowledge, ideas can be learnt which cannot be
found in textbooks. Moreover, things that acquired in lessons can be
deepened and more well comprehended through the visit of different
companies.
To see the operation of the warehouses is an indispensable part for this
study tour. We have learnt various kinds of equipment used in warehouses
We have learnt different functions of warehouses. We have learnt some
basic operations of warehouses, But all the knowledge is from textbooks
and lecture notes only. The knowledge from lectures is somewhat vague to
us after the examination. During the warehouse visits, all those
forgotten things, again, emerged in front of us. It recalled my memory
and such memory was largely consolidated after the visits.
Various logistics companies are better known to us after the study tour.
Before the study tour, many logistics companies were somewhat strange to
me. I did not know, for example, what are their main business, which
market do them focus on, how big are their business in Singapore (indeed
I did not know that TNT such a renowned logistics company would maintain
a small structure in Singapore in order to be flexible). Now, I have a
more thorough understanding of some logistics companies in Singapore.
Our advisors played a vital role throughout the journey. Before and
after each visit, our advisors always earnestly explained and clarified
some information and things that need to be supplemented and
consolidated. As we are students, something might not be easily
comprehensible to us, advisors helped to digest those things and
eventually it would become easy enough for us to absorb.
Evaluations improved the study tour a lot. At the very beginning, I was
quite annoyed by the tedious evaluations. Everything had to be evaluated
throughout the study tour, . how to get off from the bus, how to give
a thank you speech, how to rise questions, etc. Sometimes it seemed that
we were finding a quarrel in a straw. But improvements were so obvious
after each evaluation that made me be aware of the importance of
evaluations. It makes things be expedite and efficient. I realized that
evaluations are the cradle of improvements.
There are some flaws that need to be improved. First, most of the
decisions were made from committees, for the rest of us, we seldom knew
what was happening and what decisions were going to be made. I think it
is better to let all the participators know what decisions will be made.
Secondly, some of the important dates were announced at a very late time,
. the date and time of the tea reception before departure was
announced three days before, the departure date from Hong Kong remain
undecided one month before. It could not be supposed that everyone would
be free even in semester break. Sometimes, arrangements had to be made
at a very early time in order to suit the date of the study tour. It is
better to let us know some important dates as early as possible. At last,
it is the advisors’ opinion that notes or papers cannot be held during
presentations, but the main purpose of a presentation is to disseminate
information to audiences, if holding something in hand can make such
presentation more effective, why not do so.
The study tour is a successful one. It has provided precious, profound,
memorable experience to me. I will cherish the knowledge learnt from
such a great study tour.
Singapore Study Tour Individual Report
Tam Siu Kit
The tour to Singapore was really a great opportunity for us to learn.
Not only can it enrich my knowledge within the field of logistic study,
but also benefits my personal development too. Actually, before starting
the journey to Singapore, what the study tour comes up with my mind was
a chance to travel to Singapore and a means to earn credits without
examination and hard work. Now, I realize that the trip to Singapore
actually inspires my idea of logistic and benefits my personal
development. Indeed, an 8-day trip can really find out ones personality
weakness and expose them to the logistic field.
After the visits to different copanies, I realized that my knowledge
in logistic business is far from enough and lack of the vision to the
future logistic business. The trip actually gave me an insight to the
development of future logistic. For example, the trends of applying
supply chain management. Nowadays, increasing number of logistics
companies provide services well beyond the service of transportation,
but also the purchasing, customer demand forecasting, and inventory
control and even financial flow management etc. The purpose of all that
arrangement is to satisfy the customers. In other words, it is the
customer-orientated approach. The companies are trying to maximize the
benefits of customers while minimize the costs. Under this theory, a
number of different methods have been adopted to minimize the cost of
the logistic company. For inventory, many companies make use of methods
like cross-docking to reduce the number of inventories storing in
warehouse and a number of automatic handling equipments have been
invented. On one hand to reduce the labor cost and on the other hand to
utilize the space of warehouse like the use of the cranes can stack the
cargo in more effective way. The accurately demand focusing can also
help the company in reducing cost by eliminating the unsolvable products
that occupy the space of warehouse. For, maximize the benefit of
customer; many companies introduce more and more service like reverse
logistic, package, purchasing and any other value-added service. The
most important issue is to balance between service level and cost.
Usually the more customer service level is, the more cost it will be. An
interesting question is how does the logistics companies reducing the
inventory storing in the warehouse while still can provide a high level
of customer services. I think this question has to review by the
logistic company time by time.
Beside the logistic knowledge that I learned, I also benefit from
the skills of asking questions. Before I joined the study tour, I was
very shy in asking questions. Stimulated by the extra marks we could get,
I began to ask questions and realized that the important informant it
could get from asking questions. Indeed, a good question is not only
helping to get extra information but also gives a good impression to the
speaker too.
An incident occurred during the study tour, which also posed a
serious matter for me to re-evaluate myself. In the past, I believed
that I was able to manage and adapt many matters without problems. But
now I must realize that I am immature in some ways and there still are a
lot of areas for improvement. The souvenir with the particulae company
name must be given to the particular company. Due to my negligence, the
souvenir with wrong company name was taken and it was lucky that it had
not been given to the speakers. This critical incident gave a
significant implication for my careless and non-systematic works and I
must recognize my weakness
Finally, I must appreciate the works and efforts that the Singapore
government as well as their companies have made, which contribute to the
success of international hub of Singapore. Given a relatively limited
space and rising challenges from other regions of South East Asia, like
Thailand, Singapore can maintain its position as a leading logistic hub
in the region with the help of human resource, advance technology and
competitive advantages of geographical location. Obviously, Hong Kong
certainly has more competitive weapons than Singapore has, not to say
the advance technology, human resource and its geographic location
between China and overseas; we also have the helping hand from our
motherland CEPA for example. I am really, therefore, doubt that why a
number of Hong Kong citizens lose their confidence and continually yell
of the gloomy future of Hong Kong without doing anything. Yet, the
international hub of Hong Kong and the center of what used to be an Asia
‘s most vibrant city is losing the states to its competitors. But, as a
Hong Konger, we shall never lose our confidence toward the future
without a fright. The recent economic fall of Hong Kong perhaps is just
a blessing in disguise and we must learn from the past to further
reinforce our strengths and improve our weakness.
The study tour benefits myself a lot. It broadens my horizon,
develop my personality and most importantly develop my view of logistics.
It will influence myself a lot.

Individual Report
In the tour, I visited many companies in Singapore. Those are
difference companies doing difference business. Each of them has its own
focus of its business. From them, I learnt a lot of important things
about logistics. I find that there is no straight formula for success.
Caterpillar showed me the importance of company reputation. I was
so shocked that their customer level was so high. In the past, I always
thought that the cost saving was the most importance thing. I cannot
understand why Caterpillar is willing to afford the high cost to
maintain the high service level.
In the last semester, I learnt about warehouse management from the
subject of Logistics and Distribution Management. The Singapore tour
actually can be a revision of the subject. From the textbook, I learnt
about the AS/RS, different warehouses, the IT system and the inventory
management. However, unless I come to the tour, I cannot know how
companies use the device, how they view the system, how they actually
do inventory management. The manager of Caterpillar said that the
inventory management was the most important part of logistics. Also, I
learnt how different companies calculate the inventory level and how
they reduce the cost.
After the tour, I know that to provide value added service is very
important in logistics. I found a typical example from the Gates Company.
She provides a package of product that actually combined several
products together. And that kind of package can charge for 30% more on
price. From this example, I really know that the value added services
are so powerful.
I also remember that many companies now focus on the door to door
services. Whatever the customers ask for, they do for them. Most of the
customers prefer the one stop service. To make company more competitive,
it is not enough to provide only the transportation. Actually I have
learnt this from last semester. However, the tour gave a very real
example for me. Now I know that the one stop service is really the main
trend of a logistics company.
From the IMC Company, I learnt how the company increases her
competitiveness by making the operation more flexible. IMC use the
Floating Loader Facility instead of using the conventional barge to ship
the coal. This is really a new innovative idea. IMC also goes on to
invest in improving the technology. IMC are now investing the FLF MKII.
In the tour, our lecturers also taught us how to be more mature in
planning an activity and making a speech. I found that planning is a
very important part of our life. Having a good plan, we can avoid many
mistakes. The appropriate preparation is also very important. During the
tour, there were numerous examples showed to me that we, students, were
still not very good in planning. As a result causing lots of problems.
The tour also provided a lot of chances for us to ask questions
under a stressful situation. Now I learnt that we need to try our best
to overcome the pressure and show our best side to other people. In the
past, we were very shy to ask questions and not motivated to ask. But
the tour told us that the chance of asking questions will not wait. The
chance will be gone very soon. We need to be brave enough and ask as
soon as we can organize the questions. The tour also gave us
opportunities to practice and learn how to raise appropriate questions.
To conclude, the tour has encouraged us to do our best. I think it
is very important. Hong Kong students always aim at doing merely passing
the examination. However, in the commercial world, or in everywhere, it
is not enough. During our study in university, it is very important to
do our best to learn different things. The tour has taught us how to
learn. It was an invaluable experience for us not only in school, but
also for our future.

After the Singapore Study Tour, I was given a first-hand experience
and knowledge of the operations, working environment and insight related
to the shipping and logistics industry not limited in Hong Kong and also
had a chance also exchange ideas with the local students. All these
experiences are valuable to us and cannot be gained from our daily
lectures.
Compared with the study tours joined before, namely, Beijing and
Taiwan, this time was the most valuable one to me since the logistics
services provided in Singapore was modern and also because of the
proactive attitude of the Singapore companies. They dedicated to show
their capabilities and strengths to us and some of them were also
willing to share their experience and difficulties with us. Besides,
large investment can be seen in this industry as the Singapore
Government planned to develop Singapore as a logistics hub.
I have learnt some new ideas during firm visits, such as the “Very
Narrow Aisle” practicing in the warehouse in order to maximize the
space. This is my first time to see how the goods can be stored so high
with the shelf about 11m safety and the special fork lift machine to
handle the cargos. Besides, I was impressed by the simple system applied
by Caterpillar Logistics. They use the color code to distinguish the due
day of the cargo in the centre. This simple method can help reducing
human error and easily understand by workers. This let me know that the
more simple the system, the more efficient the operation.
I also realized that most of the companies pay much attention on
customer satisfaction. There are different kinds of strategies, such as
TNT’s “WOW” strategy, caterpillar’s commitment on customer
satisfaction and different added value services besides transportation
services provided by Richland in order to capture more customers. These
inspire me that to satisfy customer is the key of success since
logistics is a kind of services industry. The demonstration of dealing
with the linkage of dangerous cargo also impressed me. The workers were
skillful in handling them. It is important to have regular training and
rehearsal in a chemical cargo warehouse.
Besides visiting firms, the activity of visiting the Singapore
Polytechnic and having dinner with the local students were also
valuable to me. I could see large investment in the updated teaching and
learning facilities to develop student’s maritime skills. After having
dinner with the local students, I was surprised with their language
skills. Almost all of them are fluent in several languages speaking
including English and Mandarin. Compared with Hong Kong students, they
are much more competitive in this aspect. This has inspired me to put
much more effort on my language skill.
This is my first time to travel in this safe, clean and green city.
Singapore gives me an impression that it is a peaceful city. Although
there are different races, religions in the country, all people live
harmoniously. I am especially appreciated that the Singapore government
promotes “environment protection” by growing many trees no matter on
the side of roads or in school and encourages companies to take part in
it such as “Green Logistics” in Richland. I think Hong Kong Government
should take Singapore as a model in this aspect.
Compared with the study tours before, I think this is quite a
successful one. Since it allowed all the participants to have a chance
involving in the preparation of the tour. This time, it offered us a
valuable experience and let us know what the tour was doing at different
stages. I am also appreciated the every day evaluation during the tour,
it is important as this can improve the performance of the whole tour.
However, there are several things can be improved. Since we have
several firms visited also provide the service of exhibition logistics.
However, we were not provided with detailed information about it because
those companies only introduced them briefly. I think this kind of
service is special as Hong Kong does not provide it. If we can see how
they handle those special cargos it would be better. Besides, I think it
is needed to have a well planning on every day activities after firm
visit and inform other students where we will go the day before or
before the tour, since we may have our own planning of activities at
night. The committee may plan it before the tour.
Moreover, we only had the chance to exchange ideas with the local
students during the dinner time. The time was short and there were only
one to two local students for each table. It was difficult to know more
about each other. It is better if there were other activities such as
sight seeing or tour around the school guided by local students to know
more about their life. On the day we went to the TNT hub, the time of
visiting was too long and last for about 3 hours. The time can be
shortened no matter in the presentation or the touring. As we already
had visits on day time, it was quite tired for us to have visit till so
late.
To conclude, joining study tour this time is a valuable experience
for me again. It broaden my horizon of having an insight of the
competitive advantages of Singapore’s logistics industry and how its
operation and system is working that Hong Kong can learn from it. Also,
the knowledge acquired is useful for me to work in the logistics field
in future.

Spending 8 days in Singapore provides us a precious experience in
understanding the reality of logistics and warehousing operation.
During the study tour, we visited world-classed logistics
companies (. TNT) which allowed us to glance over their sophisticated
systems. By studying their vision, we can understand why it can be one
of the leading logistics providers in the world, by providing service
which beyond customers’ expectation. We visited famous shipping
companies (. NOL, IMC), meeting with the expertise of shipping
industries, helping us to spot out the challenges and the future trend
of shipping business. We started to notice how the growth of China had
affected the whole system of shipping business and the potential
development that going to take place. Visiting these international
companies help us in widening the scope of logistics business happening
in the world.
Besides, we have visited some smaller companies in Singapore,
showing us how to apply our knowledge into the real world. Visiting the
warehouses allows us to keep in touch with the technology commonly used
in warehousing (. AS/RS system) and understand different executive
decisions in determining application of technology. From the tour, we
learnt the importance of achieving a simple and smooth flow of goods
which is more effective that applying new technology to reduce manual
works.
With the aids of the three advisors, who helped us to arrange
company visits and provided guidance, it ensured that the greatest
benefits can be achieved. Their extensive knowledge helped to pinpoint
the reasons of success and the deficiencies of companies, providing us a
chance to put in the shoes of the directors of the companies.

I can learn much new knowledge which I cannot acquire in our textbooks.
For example, the operation of warehouse and logistics centre. I,
therefore, appreciate that I could have this opportunity going to
Singapore, a main logistics hub in Asia, to acquire the knowledge in the
real working environment within our industry. The Caterpillar impressed
me the most. William provided a very memorable time for us because of
his good treating. To him, we could only provide nothing for him in
business especially.
Apart from the knowledge of logistics, I am able to learn in other
disciplines, such as the preparation of the study tour, communication
with others. I have a bit improvement after this tour. I feel I am more
mature then before.
It is my first time to go to Singapore. It impressed me a lot,
especially its effectiveness and efficiency. They are the main reasons
for its success. I fully believe that it would be a main competitor of
Hong Kong because of its brilliant system. Not only the logistics
industry, but also the whole city operation is very wonderful.
Last but not least, I am able to make a very good friendship with my
classmates. During the tour in Singapore, we had a good chance to be
together within a week. Thanks to this tour to let us to stay closely
together.

Report on Singapore Study Tour
The Singapore Study Tour gave us a good opportunity to know more about
the logistics-related industry through visiting companies in the
logistics field. These firm visits not only enable us to widen our
horizon, but also provides us with valuable lessons which are useful for
our future career.
During the tour, I gained more knowledge on what logistics was, how
logistics actually worked in business, etc. On the other hand, what I
have learnt from our course before helps me to understand the
presentations and site visits more easily.
Throughout the visits, it was not difficult to find that different
companies had different approaches in their business strategies. For
example, some companies emphasize space utilization of warehouse to
maximize revenue while some prefer systematic arrangement of cargoes to
do things simple even space is not fully utilized.
Also, focusing on IT strategy in providing logistics services has become
a growing trend. Companies like G&U Logistics invest largely in IT-
driven infrastructure . AS/RS to minimize human intervention. However,
I have learnt from Caterpillars that IT and automation are not the
ultimate solutions for all business issues. Knowing different views of
companies enables me to have a better understanding on the pros and cons
of different business strategies.
However, there is one thing in common for the companies visited. They
all realize the importance of value-added services and emphasize on
these services to stay or improve their competitiveness. As for the
companies which are the third-party logistics service providers, most of
them provide one-stop integrated logistics solution. These are probably
reflecting the trend in the industry.
Apart from what I have learnt, there is rooms for improvement for the
organizing of the tour. As it seems that some departments of the tour
have more workload than others. The division of labour can be made
better next time.
Generally speaking, joining the Singapore Study Tour is a marvelous and
valuable experience!

The Singapore study tour gives me the golden chance to really look into
how the logistics company operates. It brought me out from the classroom
to the real working environment. We visited a variety of companies,
which concentrated on different sectors in the shipping industry. It
enabled me to broaden my horizon. For example, before the study tour I
never know that Caterpillar has a field on logistics or TNT works on
both express and logistics.
The visits to the warehouse and airport express were truly beneficial to
my studies. In the warehouse, I could actually apply what I’ve learnt
in the lectures to real life situation. Different kind of warehouses
will have different kind of strategies to manage the warehouse. The
ultimate aim is to maximize the profit. I also observed the systematic
and diversified management of warehouse through the use of special
handling equipments such as Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) forklift truck to
maximize storage space. During the visit to the airport express, I
learnt that efficiency and accuracy are crucial to successful airport
express management. It is because the whole express progress demands
prompt action. It requires quite a lot of manual work too.
Besides, the managers and presidents who delivered the presentation were
all very patient and willing to share their experience. The most
impressed ones were the president at Freight Link Express, who commented
quite a lot on the status of Singapore and Hong Kong port; manager from
Caterpillar, who explained the running of the warehouse wholeheartedly
and sweat a lot; and captains from IMC, who explained deeply about the
operations on board.
This is the first study tour I have ever joined. Indeed, I have gained a
lot from the study tour. Apart from having an insight to the shipping
industry, I also get to know the three advisors more.
Pako Lau
It is my first time to join a study tour and travel outside Hong
Kong. It is a valuable chance for me to widen my horizon. Since Year 1,
I have learnt much logistics knowledge. However, it is rarely to see how
they can be applied to the real situation. Through this tour, I really
saw the application of the knowledge in the real life.
Most of the visits were impressive. But the two impressed me most
were IMC and G&U. IMC showed us how its business was developed to the
current status. I can see how it planned for its development and
strategies, also how to conduct market forecast . And the special
arrangement of the presentation in G&U warehouse was also a good memory;
they taught us by showing how they dealt with incentive among staffs.
Also they demonstrated how the cargoes were being handled through ASRS,
and also the action taken for the leakage of the danger goods. All these
were really realistic and applied to what we learnt. Thus it is really a
valuable lesson within the one week tour.
Besides learning to apply the knowledge from the books, the tour
also helped to develop us in other aspects. We can have chance to learn
to take care ourselves and accept other country’s culture. That’s why
I think study tour is a good chance to learn both knowledge and self
development.
To sum up, the study tour is really a valuable experience and all
the money we spent is worthwhile.

I am glad to have the chance to take part in this study tour. Although
this is not the first time to join the study tour, this is the first
time I have visited Singapore. I am sure that it is a precious
experience that I can never have again in my life.
Besides, I also learnt many things there. First, after visiting many
organizations, such as IMC, Caterpillar and PSA, it gives me a more
clear idea about how logistics system works. Also, I have also
recognized the role of 3PL and 4 PL, which is actually a very hot topic
among the world.
The strongest impression during trip is most of the companies mainly
focus on human resources. For example, Richland holds regular courses to
educate its employees to work comply with the latest machines. Apart
from the concentration of developing its technology level, it also
upgrades its human resources. Also, TNT highlights the use of human
resources as well; they believe that employees are the key to provide
the best service to customers.
In addition, what I can see is the division of logistics works between
Hong Kong and Singapore. Both of them are in similar situation, they are
acting as logistics hub in Asia. Hong Kong mainly serves the needs of
the Mainland China. However, Singapore concentrates on serving South-
East Asia, such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Some issues said
that Singapore is the biggest competitor against Hong Kong. In my view,
there are many oncoming logistics hubs among different countries in the
world. It is possible to form partnership or collaboration rather that
being competitors.
Before I went to Singapore, I imagined that there iwa clean and tidy.
After I have been there, I think that Singapore is not only clean and
tidy, but the buildings are also well-designed and beautiful. Moreover,
I saw many “Merlions” in Singapore and I have learnt that
“Singapore” means “lion city”.
Lastly, I would like to thank Peter, Jimmy and Dr. Tai. I can see that
they are keen on educating us in different aspects, in order to help us
to be well-prepared before graduation. I have learnt many things outside
textbooks.
Apart from learning, this study tour let me see and try many things
outside Hong Kong. For example, I tried the Laksa and Satay. I strongly
recommend that it is valuable to join this study tour. I really hope
that the Department of Logistics could let students of the Global Supply
Chain programme join the study tour in the future.
Chow Ping Tat
In the International Study Tour—Singapore, we visited many companies.
All these companies gave me a deep impression on them.
Firstly, we really received warm welcome from them. Warm
welcomes were not come from their souvenirs, lunch or buffet but from
their heart. During the visits, managers of those companies told us many
real life situations about running a logistics business, managing a
warehouse or serving customers. The managers or companies were really
willing to teach us (as logistics students) what they were facing or
problems they had. For example, TNT, TNT at Singapore mainly
concentrated on the express service. From TNT at Singapore, I learnt two
things, actually, two new terms: Time Sensitive Delivery and Cold Chain
Management. These are the unique terms that they had.
Secondly, I saw the different styles between Singapore and Hong
Kong companies. Singapore companies treated us as their guests. They
tried their best to serve us. I mean they would try their best to tell
us about their marketing strategy and operation as much as possible.
However, Hong Kong companies or companies in Pearl River Delta had a
very strong protectionism and many “business confidential”. For
example, during the visit of TNT at Singapore and Trans-Link Express
Pte Ltd., I learnt not only theeir business but also their customers’
business. From Trans-Link Express, the manager told us three case
studies: FujiXerox, KFC and Popular. Trans-Link Express do not use the
AS/RS system. The manager said that if they adopted AS/RS system, the
warehouse construction cost was low but the system set up cost was very
high. So they used high rack system instead. He also told us why AS/RS
system was not suitable for Popular. It was because there were so many
books with different sizes and titles. It was impossible to fully
utilize the AS/RS system.
It is worth for us to join the Study Tour, especially if we
want to learn more real life situations besides book theories. These
experiences were very valuable. I get more than I learn in classroom!!!

Report on Singapore Study Tour
This Singapore Study Tour was the very first time that I left Hong
Kong, surprised? I have never thought that I will spend my very first
trip in a Study Tour, but I really did. This study tour was really an
invaluable experience for me.
By participating in this study tour, I know how to work as a company
and how would different departments interact in the organizing process.
A department could never work alone without the help from other
departments. I know the importance of punctuality in a company. One-
minute delay affects a lot. We have to finish all the work to meet the
deadline.
Among a number of companies that we have visited, the companies that
impressed me most are Caterpillar Logistics Services, Inc. and IMC
Shipping Co. Pte. Ltd. What I would like to say about Caterpillar is
that the business manager who served us that day really impressed me a
lot. He was really willing to share with us wholeheartedly. He was so
enthusiastic that he personally brought us to the warehouse, explained
and answered all the things in great details even though he already
sweated a lot due to the temperature in the warehouse.
IMC impressed me most not only because it was the company that my
group had presentation on, but also the enthusiastic staff of IMC.
Moreover, we met our previous tutor, Jasmine, there. She made me start
realizing that we should prepare to work overseas. That was really a big
surprise. IMC treated us with a lunch buffet. We could talk to the
staffs more freely under such informal environment. We learnt a lot
during the conversation. The Suntec City tour was an unforgettable
experience too such as the fountain and the panorama view of the whole
Singapore.
Other than the firm visits, we have gone to many different places.
Sentosa is really a beautiful place. The musical fountain there was
great. But for the food and shopping in Singapore, they were just the
same as in Hong Kong. This really disappointed me. All the things we
found there could also be found in Hong Kong but with a lower price.
This study tour also gave me a chance to know more classmates and
the advisors especially. I had the lessons with Peter and Dr. Tai
before but not with Jimmy. Peter and Dr. Tai were quite different when
they gave us lectures. Especially Dr. Tai, he brought us so much fun,
such as the song of “COCONUT”. Jimmy was very patient to answer all
our questions.
I think it would be better if there is a day off at the middle of
the trip because it was quite exhausted to have firm visits everyday. It
is easy to mix up what we have seen in different companies.
Before I finish my report, let me say a clear and loud thank you to
our advisors, Jimmy, Peter and Dr. Tai, for their advises throughout
the whole study tour, Thank You!
Yam Lok Man, Mandy, 02361226d, year 3, ISTL
Before the tour, I had visited DHL HK hub, TNT HK express centre, MTL, HIT,
OOCL and placement experiences in Panalpina and Beijing. During firm visits in
Singapore, I made a lot of comparisons between both countries in terms of
potential development, strategic location, competitiveness and talent.
TNT
There are many reasons behind for TNT and DHL setting up its hub in Hong Kong and
Singapore respectively. Only 4 hours and 7 hours are needed for a consignment
from Hong Kong and Singapore to be shipped to most of the Asian region. Although
the cost of doing logistics in both countries is very expensive, there are many
advantages for setting up a hub in Hong Kong or Singapore. They are effective
communication, extensive network, good accessibility, high technology. It is
believed that both countries possess similar and competitive characteristics. One
difference may be accessibility. Hong Kong is located at the heart of Asia and
the main gateway to Southern China while Singapore is located at the heart of
South East Asia and shorter period of time is required to travels from Singapore
to Australia than Hong Kong. It gives certain strategic considerations for
international logistics companies to set up a hub. Moreover, Freedom in Hong Kong
is better while the language speaking skills in Singapore is better than Hong
Kong.
Port of Singapore Authority
Since Singapore is well positioned in the heart of South East Asia and has
large hinterlands such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc, many shipping
companies choose Singapore as a transshipment hub because it is located at an
axial route. Hong Kong also possesses similar characteristics. Both places are
regarded as highly efficient places for conducting business. Unit cost in both
countries is very much higher than peripheral regions, but it is still a
preferred hub.
G&U Logistics
Chemical commodity is an important sector in shipping industry. According to
G&U logistics, many manufacturing factories have been set up in Singapore and
Singaporean Government actively promotes itself as a chemical hub. Hong Kong
is less likely to play an important role in this aspect. It is because most
companies in Hong Kong are private enterprise-orientated while most of
companies in Singapore are under the control of government.
Caterpillar Logistics Services
Services quality prevails over everything. Market segmentation, Quality
control like 6 sigma, importance on customer relationship are the thoughtful
inspiration in the seminar. Also, it is very important to ensure products /
service quality and all staff can understand and operate the whole system
easily. Simple is the best told by William will be bear in my mind.
Other companies such as Freight Links, Richland
Singaporean Government has actively involved in the logistics development such
as funding. Also, many firms we have visited are technology-driven logistics
providers, they are willingly to bear the risk and thus put substantial
investment in IT development. Also they have formed a quality team in
controlling and ensuring the service quality. Besides, Singaporean government
takes the initiative to promote environmental-friendly business which sharpens
and glamorizes the image of logistics. It is interested to see some trees are
planted in Singapore terminal that I have never seen in HK.
Personal Feeling
During the Singapore study tour, I made a lot of comparisons between Hong Kong
people and Singaporeans in terms of mindset, competitiveness, adaptability,
flexibility and language speaking skills. Here is the personal inspiration in
Singapore rather than comparison of logistics development. Background, culture
and education are important factors to distinguish and differentiate
Singaporeans. Successful logistics development in Singapore is rooted from
glorious culture development. Singaporeans are able to speak up to 4 different
languages and they use English for communication in their daily lives. So
their spoken English is more fluent than many Hong Kong students. Moreover,
there are 4 different nationals living in Singapore which is considered an
international city with multi-Asian and Western elements, it lets
Singaporeans more exposed to mixed culture and become more co-operative and
flexible.
Although the cost of doing logistics in both countries is very high, there is
no way Hong Kong and Singapore could compete with its neighbours by cutting
costs alone. To justify its significantly undeniable high levels of costs,
both countries must keep on improving value-added services. Technology and IT
are not the only way to improve the service. Innovation and quality services
are also contributing factors.
Improvement
As a year 3 student, I have engaged in two study tours. Certain improvements
have been made by concerted efforts by teachers. In the PRD tour, most of the
students played a passive role and were led by teachers. In the Singapore tour,
by forming planning committee, students played an active role and are like a
group of expertise in the site visits. Since students took the initiative,
surely they could benefit a lot from it.

Reflection on the Singapore Study Tour
Reflection on and inspiration from firm visits:
Through these fruitful and substantial firm visits, I have acquired
extensive knowledge on logistics, express and shipping lines services.
These can also widen my horizons in the field of logistics and let me
experience the real business world outside the classroom, which is more
practical, rather than just theoretical.
In the visit of G & U Logistics, the most impressive thing is the
demonstration of handling the leakage of chemicals. That is a company
mainly provides warehousing service for hazardous chemicals which puts
emphasis on safety, so there had a real show on how to deal with the
leakage of chemicals, that really shows efficient and professional to us
It’s really amazing! In addition, I also learnt that the Singapore
Government puts great emphasis on chemicals, so that’s why G & U
Logistics regards chemicals market as a niche market with growing
potential in Singapore and focuses freight forwarding in other countries
which without good safety regulations.
After the visit of TNT, I realize that there is a difference of TNT in
Singapore and Hong Kong. That is the elements of logistics and express
are merged into one company in Singapore where they are separated in
Hong Kong. That’s the reason why in the presentation of the company,
the manager there always emphasizes TNT is a “fully integrated express-
logistics service providers”, instead of just logistics. Furthermore,
we have visited its hub in airport, it provides a full picture for me on
the import & export process of the courier and parcels. One of the
things I have learnt is that there is the case of “Interline”, which
means in case of urgency, the parcels may not enter the hub and will be
transferred to another plane for transshipment. On the other hand, I
detected a problem concerning the system’s efficiency and effectiveness,
. there has no computer system for tracing the storage of parcels in
case if there is mis-sorting of parcels. It is because sorting is done
manually, so I think the chance of mis-sorting is quite high and a
serious delay will be caused without the computerized technology.
In the visit of IMC, I have a better understanding on pool concept which
is quite new in Asia, but not fresh in European countries. Also,
Floating Loader Facility (FLF) can act as a short-term solution to meet
rising demand which has less investment and capital costs, but with
acceptable loading rate, . 35,000 tons per day.
In this fast pacing century, efficiency is a crucial element in every
industry, especially our logistics industry as every second is cost.
Thanks to this trend, information technology plays a strategic role in
logistics. This can be demonstrated by the firms we have visited, as all
of them have impeccable integrated IT system. Apart from IT systems, the
logistics companies also put focus on people, including both employees
and customers. For instance, TNT will let its customers to define the
service levels in order to provide customers’ preferred services and
its people are having vertical knowledge on TNT. Also, Gates Rubber
Company has a long-term relationship with customers, . contract
rebate system. From the success of these companies, I understand that
people focus is of utmost importance for the company in providing
preeminent services for gaining good recognition.
Reflection on student exchange dinner:
Throughout the dinner with the students in Singapore, I realized that
there is a solicitous need for Hong Kong students to learn better
languages, including English and Putonghua. It is because the students
there can at least speak 3 types of fluent languages, this really
imposes a threat to us undoubtedly. In addition, I have a better
understanding on Singapore culture and history, . if the students are
subsidized by the Government for study, they need to work in Singapore
for at least several years for compensation The length of working period
depends on the amount of loan granted which is a different case from
Hong Kong where repay is the situation.
Comments on study tour:
The study tour involves all participants by dividing us into several
departments; I think this approach is good, as this can provide one more
chance for us to learn further, . techniques in communication and
organizing activities. These are essential for our career also.
Comments on Singapore tour:
This is the first time I have visited Singapore. Thanks to the green
plants alongside the pavement and road, it gives me a sense of comfort,
feeling fresh and green. As Singapore is domiciled by different races of
people, I think Singapore does not have a strong sense of its own
culture, that’s why I cannot tell the characteristics of Singaporeans.
Concerning the sightseeing, the Musical Fountain in Sentosa is really
fantastic and marvelous which is very nice and interesting. I enjoy it
very much!
Martin
In school, what you learn is the hardware of that particular aspect.
From the outside world, . language, presentation skill, manner and
many softwares, you need to manage them before you survive in the
business world.
In this tour, all of us have heard what are fluent English no matter
they are the speakers or residents there. You may say Singapore is a
multi-nation country, isn’t it in Hong Kong? It is not an excuse for us
not to speak fluent English. They speak English most of the time. How
about us? We speak English unless it is unavoidable. The differences in
attitude made us being uncompetitive and become an obstacle in our
future career.
It is an art to have a nice and smooth presentation. Compare with all
the speakers, you may guess the blueprint of a good presentation.
(Compare TNT and PSA would be a good example) Having a presentation in
a warehouse is my first ever experience. It is G & U Logistics that
shared this experience with me and also PSA just give us a very general
brief notes and then go to the port to have window site seeing is an
example how they rank our importance to her company.
In macro scale, Singapore government well planned for her future made
her successful in the past years. Work zones, school belts and
residential areas are well separated. Developments are mostly based on
her strength in the hub and airport.
Anyway, it is worthwhile to go to this study tour.

I gained a lot from the tour. In addition to substantial knowledge,
know-how of the industry, I acquired my way of personal improvement and
development. This is the most valuable gain from the tour to me.
From the learning point of view, I am not participative and active
enough to raise questions. One of the main reasons is that I cannot
digest the information given to me immediately. This is resulted from
the format of lectures we have in the University. We are usually
distributed with a set of note, therefore, we don’t have to process the
information during the lesson. This is no good for our future career. We
have to train our analytical ability that we are capable to raise key
questions in order to master the knowledge.
For personal improvement, I was gratified that I am an elected
committee member for the study tour. As the head of marketing department,
I have much involvement in organizing this activity. The main duty is to
deal with the travel agent. It is a challenging job for me, as the
responsibility is much on behalf of 38 participants to select the most
competitive travel agency. During the progress, I learned the skill to
communicate and things to be considered when making a deal. It is an
opportunity to expose myself to a real world when making a comparatively
large amount of money transaction. To be honest, the workload is quite
heavy, especially during the examination period. However, the success of
this tour is the most rewarding to the effort. What’s more is that all
committee members become more mature in carrying out meetings and
handling problems throughout the tour. Thank for all, including advisors
and our group members.
I realized that after one and a half year study under the Department
of Logistics, I learn less than what I should. I even don’t know the
operating environment of this industry. However, my interest towards
this industry has increased much more. I am confident that I will devote
more time to catch up with the deficiency in the coming semesters.
To conclude, the study tour is hard but at the same time it gives
me a valuable experience that mentioned above. I think study tour is a
“value-added process” towards our discipline of study. I am looking
forward to participating in this kind of tour again.

Singapore, one of the dragonheads of Asian logistics, is where we
visited this time. At first, the study tour was no more than an ordinary
trip for me excepting the refund system. However, I was wrong. In the
early stage, when we were organizing the study tour, it was really a
hard time and serious. Since we needed to wake up early, did the thing
that we have never done, and, also, scolded by the advisors. At the
beginning, I was quite upset by this. However, it really helped me to
learn a lot. In the preparation stage, I learned the importance of
timeliness along with how to work as a team in an organization.
It was just a beginning, since I have learnt much more in the tour. The
technology of Singapore is always in the vanguard of Asia. In the first
firm visit, we visited a warehouse storing chemical products. The
warehouse was automated which I have never seen before. Moreover, the
cleaning process during leakage also broadened my view. I could also
visit different warehouses storing different kinds of goods like parts
of automobile, furniture, plastics products, electronics parts,
food……etc. To sum up, I learnt more in the operation of logistics,
like how TNT collect and express their cargo, how the side-loading lift
trucks and Automated Guided Vehicle Systems work, how the warehouse to
deal with lacking chicken during the exposure of bird flu. It was really
a valuable and unforgettable experience for me.
