It may not matter. Monday’s appointment of John Ternus to be Apple’s new
CEO marks a sudden shift in the conversation: Apple remains a product
company first. Ternus’ ascension to CEO, from his role as senior vice president
of hardware engineering, is a reminder that Apple emphasizes products above all
else. Without iPhones, Macs, Watches, and iPads, the rest doesn’t matter.

Steve Jobs left three gifts for Apple before his 2011 death from pancreatic cancer.
Just two months before he died, a visibly ill Jobs attended a Cupertino City
Council meeting to secure approval for the construction of Apple Park, the
company’s current headquarters. That came a day after he delivered a keynote
address at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in which Jobs
introduced iCloud, the back end service that creates the seamless Apple

experience.
But Jobs’ greatest parting gift to Apple was choosing his successor, Tim Cook,
who had already revolutionized Apple’s supply chain as chief operating officer.
Cook, the operator, wasn’t the obvious successor to one of the most charismatic
leaders of all time, but Jobs understood that Apple was entering a new phase
that required a different skill set from his own. By 2011, the company needed a
manager of innovative talent more than a singular innovator.
Cook has never tired of relaying the lessons he learned from Jobs, but he also
taught the old master something new. Jobs always believed that if Apple made
great product and great user experiences, combined with great marketing, the
rest would take care of itself. Cook showed Jobs that ultraefficient
manufacturing operations that didn’t sacrifice quality were an equally important
part of Apple’s success.
Now that Cook is stepping aside, he and the board are turning back the clock by
naming a CEO who is primarily a “product guy.” Like Jobs, Cook chose a
longtime Apple employee that worked up the ranks to become a senior leader.

Like Cook, Ternus has a deep understanding of Apple’s culture and its relentless
focus on user experience.
“We never want to ship junk, right? We want to ship great products that have
that Apple experience, have that Apple quality,” Ternus said in an interview last
week before his official appointment.
Ternus is best known for shepherding the almost seamless transition of Mac
computers from Intel’s chips to the company’s own Apple Silicon. Thanks to its
own chips, Apple now has a tremendous edge in the PC market. The enthusiastic
reception to the new MacBook Neo, which sells for as little as $500 to students,
is Exhibit A.
Ternus’s approach to Apple is Jobs-like, down to a preoccupation with small
details like screws. During a 2024 commencement address to his alma mater at
the University of Pennsylvania engineering school, Ternus relayed a story about
making the Cinema Display, the first Apple product he worked on a quarter-
century ago.
The monitor had been designed with screws in the back that had 25 concentric
circles machined into their flat heads to make them sparkle as light passed over
them. Ternus was on the road at the supplier’s facility, and sometime after
midnight he pulled out a magnifying glass to count the circles, finding that the
supplier had gotten it wrong, putting in 35 grooves.
It’s this unusual obsession that defines Apple products.

“Maybe a customer notices, maybe they don’t,” he said. “But either way,
whenever I saw one of those displays on someone’s desk, it mattered to me to
know that my teammates and I had considered everything about it.”
That Jobsian dedication to detail is back atop Apple. It’s good news for fans of
Apple products—and it should be good news to investors, as well.
